Oct 31, 2019 · This is the one aspect of using my mini mill for drilling instead of a drill press, that I completely forgot about. In almost 20 years that I own my Grizzly mini mill it was used probably 75% for drilling. And as Mike pointed out, the wear on the lower part of the column is there.

Has anybody used Grizzly Milling machines? Was thinking about picking up a Grizzly mini milling machine as a cheaper alternative to a fullsize milling machine just to learn the basics. Does anybody have any experience with these? 14 comments. share.

Jan 07, 2018 · For the same price, you could get the Griz (1490), powerfeed (+345), a 4 inch milling vise (Shars, +250), and still be left with a little over 300 for tooling and whatnot, or to put towards a DRO setup. So, my personal opinion, the PM may be the better machine, but not better enough to justify the price over the Grizzly.

Good speed control, fairly rigid and overall pretty nice to use. I've done a lot of research on this in the past, and it seems that in the smaller mills the G0704/BF20L is king of the hill.

By the time you add a goodsized vise, you're running up against the table travel limitations more often than not. It is a very nice machine, but my milling experience is limited to only that machine, so my view could be totally skewed. PS Grizzly now sells an R8 minimill, the G0781. It doesn't have a solid column, belt drive or an air spring counterweight, but it's an improvement on the G8689.

The only other factor to take into consideration is that i have a some experience on a lathe but zero experience on a mill, but obviously willing to learn.
